Bowie Intermediate Dress Code 2007-2008 We take pride in Bowie I.S.D. and its traditions. One of the most important ways of doing this is for each one of us to reflect careful and consistent personal habits and appearance each day. We seek to avoid the fads that are not in keeping with good grooming. In addition, hairstyles and certain manner of dress that might present a danger to the student’s health and safety, cause an interference with school work, or create classroom or school disruption, will not be tolerated. The dress code is in effect at all school events and at any time students are on school property. Students and parents may determine student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with following:
- Abbreviated clothing, such as tank tops, midriff shirts or blouses/backless tops or dresses, transparent clothing, torn, ripped, or unhemmed clothing are not permitted. No skin may show when arms are raised. This includes cheerleader uniforms, etc.
- Shirts shall be buttoned appropriately, and belts shall be buckled.
- Shoulder straps on girls’ shirts and dresses must be at least 2 ½ inches wide and must cover under garment.
- Hair shall be kept clean and well groomed. Only natural hair colors are allowed. Boys’ hair shall be out of the eyes, no lower than the bottom of the earlobe on the sides, and to the base of the neck in the back. Boys shall not braid their hair, wear ponytails, or Mohawks. Any hairstyle that is determined to be a distraction by the administration will be prohibited.
- Appropriate shoes must be worn at all times. Girls may not wear high heel shoes. Students must have appropriate shoes for P.E. Improper P.E. shoes will result in a grade reduction.
- Skirts and shorts must come to the top of the knee. .
- Any writing on clothing deemed inappropriate by staff will not be allowed. This includes, but is not limited to, alcohol, drugs, weapons, violence or anything promoting or condoning negative behavior.
- Boys & girls shall not wear hats, caps or any headwear in the building.
- Boys shall not wear ear jewelry. Girls may not wear fake fingernails, makeup or glitter lip gloss. No body piercing jewelry will be allowed except in girl’s ears.
- Sunglasses are not worn in school unless medically prescribed.
- Baggy pants, chains, or any clothing or item has a gang related significance is prohibited. No sagging or torn pants will be permitted. No tattoos will be visible
- Any prohibited item will be confiscated for the remainder of the school year.
Students who fail to meet these guidelines or whose appearance is disruptive to school activities shall be placed in ISS or sent home to make necessary changes. Repeated offenses may result in more serious discipline action. The principal, or designee, has the authority to make the final decision concerning fads, etc., and to insure compliance with the dress and grooming policy.
